In the past decades, society has been overwhelmed with beautiful and timeless interior design. Unfortunately, these timeless designs were not made to last, resulting in 11 billion kg of furniture being discarded in the EU every year. Circular solutions like reupholstering are expensive and wasteful, and recycling a furniture piece is very complex and only happens with 10% of furniture in the EU. During upholstery, old fabric is thrown away (hopefully for recycling), new upholstery creates waste (25% to 45% offcuts), and many shapes are nearly impossible to handle or disassemble, as the average piece contains 20 – 30 different materials.
